The Urban League Affordable Housing & Community Development Corporation is working to build the infrastructure and economy of urban neighborhoods. The Urban League Affordable Housing and Community Development Corporation (ULAHCDC) is the real estate and community development arm of the Urban League of Hudson County (ULOHC). The organization, established as a subsidiary in 1993, offers a full scope of development services related to affordable housing and economic development projects. In this capacity, the corporation is revitalizing low /moderate income areas while preserving the fabric of its neighborhoods.
Partnerships with businesses and community organizations, housing advocates, government and tenants groups have been established to implement a strategy for renovating existing housing stock, developing economic initiatives for community investment, and recycling private dollars into the local community.
Projects undertaken by the corporation include both residential housing and commercial development. Residential sites include the Bayonne Community Action Project (BCAP) at 432 & 582 Avenue C. This project provides eighteen units of affordable housing for families in Bayonne. 26 Bergen Avenue: Tegu I, and 30 Bergen Avenue: Tegu II provides affordable housing for fourteen low and very low income families in Jersey City. The word 'Tegu' is Swahili for 'nurturing place', as it is our intent to not just build housing but to help people make 'homes'. Commerical developement sites include Urban League administrative offices at 900 Bergen Avenue, a childcare center and administrative offices at 202 Central Avenue, and a charter school at 128 Danforth Avenue.
As part of Project Reclaim, a nationally recognizeed 26 block redevelopment initiative along Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City, the Urban League Housing CDC renovated a 10,000 square feet bank building into a 27,000 square feet structure that houses the Urban League of Hudson County headquarters where a myraid of services, programs and resources are provided to the Hudson County community.
