Student Internships/Externships/Service Learning Opportunities

The Urban League of Hudson County offers a wide range of unpaid internship opportunities for students and recent graduates to receive academic credit and work experience. Students who intern contribute to our mission, and enhance the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to function as professionals.

We offer our interns in-depth involvement in new business development ventures; social services; employment and training; housing and community development; childcare and the youth development field.

Descriptions of Intern Opportunities by Department

Education and Youth Development 
Assignments will include collecting and analyzing program data and maintaining information files. Volunteers will also assist with life skills classes, youth workshops, field trips and office routines such as handling written and telephone inquiries. This internship is ideal for undergraduate students and recent graduates seeking a general understanding of the youth development field, along with specific knowledge of the strategies and tools used by advocates, program staff, and educators to address the needs of at-risk and court involved youth in the community.

Health and Human Services Department
These departments provide an array of services to adolescents and the elderly. Intern assignments will include collecting and analyzing program data and maintaining information files. Interns will also assist with workshops, field trips and office routines.

The Urban League Affordable Housing & Community Development Corporation

This department implements the ULHC strategy for renovating existing housing stock, and developing economic initiatives for community investment. Interns will support development activities and be exposed to facility and property management, lien research and the rehabilitation of commercial and residential properties.

Employment and Training Department
This department operates a One Stop Employment Center and a variety of training programs that enable participants to move into the workforce. Interns will support the department's instructors.

Communications
Departments of ULOHC are responsible for the development of all agency publications and media efforts. Interns will be assigned to a variety of tasks including providing media-related information services to the general public, preparing and mailing promotional materials. Interns will also be involved with developing special events and providing editorial assistance and research such as fact-checking, proofreading, and editing.

Information Technologies Division
The IT Division oversees day-to-day operations of ULHC's computer systems. Current priorities include updating the Urban League's web site, manning our "help" desk, and preparing new computers for use.

Financial Support Information:
All of the Urban League of Hudson County's internships and service learning opportunities are unpaid. Applicants in need of financial aid to support their internship are encouraged to explore potential funding sources through the career services, service learning or alumni offices on their campus. Please consult your school's academic departments to determine the policies and procedures for acquiring academic credit. The ULHC will help facilitate appropriate placement for such academic internships and assist interns with tapping into information resources for completing their research projects, supplementing their course work, and documenting and evaluating their internship experience.

Internship Requirements:
Program Requirements – You must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in an Associates, Bachelor's or Master's degree program or a recent graduate of an accredited college or university. In most cases, you must have completed at least the freshman year. We also ask that you present evidence of satisfactory academic progress and leadership potential. Recent college graduates and masters-level students are encouraged to apply.
