Ms. Watson is a long time Hudson County resident City and graduate of from Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Studies and Political Science. Ms. Watson was appointed to head the Urban League of Hudson County (ULHC) in 1989, after holding several management positions in the League. At the time she took the position the agency offered five programs with an operating budget of less than $2 million and a staff of twenty.
In addition to expanding the diversity and capability of ULHC programs, Ms. Watson has also worked diligently to develop the League’s two subsidiaries; Starting Points a community day care center with an enrollment of 250; and the Urban League Affordable Housing & Community Development Corporation. In addition she spearheaded the establishment of the Jersey City Community Charter School in 1997. To help ensure those residents receive the services and tax dollars due them, Ms. Watson took on the additional responsibility of chairing the Hudson County Complete (2000 Census) Count Committee. She has received numerous awards and honors including; “The (year) 2000 Women of Action” from the City of Jersey City, and by the Hudson County Board of Freeholders; the New Jersey Pride Award in the category of Community Development by New Jersey Monthly Magazine; the Hudson County Bar Association’s Liberty Bell Award; the City News Publishing Company’s One of the Most Influential Persons in New Jersey Award; the United Way of Hudson County’s Mary T. Norton Award; and various others.
Mr. Umar is the owner of a successful Accounting, Tax and Business Consulting Firm, who decided to take on the additional responsibility of ULHC CFO to help in the ULHC mission of community empowerment. He is currently the interim CEO of the Urban League. He has applied the same discipline that helped him build his business (which continues to thrive) to directing all the various fiscal components of ULHC. Mr Umar is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and member of both the American Institution of Certified Public Accountants and the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants. He holds an MS in taxation from Seton Hall University and a BA in accounting from Rutgers University. Prior to opening his business, Mr. Umar, was a staff accountant and later Accounting Supervisor for the United Parcel Service during which he supervised and trained staff in various aspects of accounting, bookkeeping and payroll; wrote General Ledger and Fixed Assets polices and manuals for corporate use and delivered presentations on retirement plans to corporate employees. Mr. Umar is a Jersey City resident and speaks several languages.
Mr. Baba Sulemana is currently the Interim CFO of the Urban League of Hudson County, Inc. A Public Accountant with over fifteen years of experience in non-profit organizations, he has been successful in assisting the CFO in managing the ULOHC’s finances. Before coming to the Urban League, Mr. Sulemana was Accounts Receivable Coordinator at Best Foods Baking Company, a subsidiary of Unilever USA.
Mr. Sulemana has a unique ability to express complex ideas simply. This corporate and personal skill enables him to connect with the Urban League of Hudson County’s Young Scholars about achieving their ambitions and academic goals.
Baba Sulemana holds a BS in accounting from the University of Maryland, a MS in Accounting and a MBA in Finance from St Peter’s University.
Mr. Sulemana resides in Jersey City with his wife and two daughters.
